BSSEC, supporting Deloitte, were commissioned by Nuffield Health to undertake an evaluation of assets to assist in meeting their energy reduction aspirations.

Client Requirements

Nuffield Health is the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider in the United Kingdom. Established in 1957 the charity operates 31 Nuffield Health Hospitals and 111 Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Gyms. Nuffield Health employ 11,000 people with an annual revenue of over £700million.

To undertake an evaluation of assets to assist in meeting their energy reduction aspirations of 25% by 2020, through review of site energy use information and on-site energy audits. Through review of site energy use information and on-site energy audits, BSSEC were to identify a programme of energy efficiency measures to generate immediate savings through better energy management practices and building operational control and provide a schedule of spend to save measures suitable for business case submission and structured implementation planning.

Methodology

BSSEC’s initial role was to identify changes in building operation to make the most significant energy reductions and use this to develop a new Standard Operating Procedure whilst providing support to the Deloitte team in implementing the new operating procedure
For each site audit BSSEC undertook a comprehensive review of energy use and equipment installed both to understand immediate savings potential and comply with ESOS legislation reporting requirements, delivering the following:

  • Desk-based baseload analysis
  • Site visits
  • Energy use analysis; in depth review of energy consuming equipment and departmental energy use
  • Maintenance review
  • Site savings assessment
  • Energy audit and savings opportunities report

Outcomes

After identifying areas of energy waste, BSSEC worked closely with Deloitte and site facilities team to implement changes to operational practices and building control systems to standardise controls and setpoints across the portfolio, develop a set of standard operating procedure for building types and deliver a set of behaviour change training material to assist staff in understanding the equipment installed and how best to operate if for optimise energy efficiency.

Immediate savings of at least 7% to gyms and hospitals were identified and subsequently verified through follow on site visits and data analysis, with additional spend to save measures, when implemented, generating up to 45% saving in electricity and 28% in natural gas with an average payback of 2.1 years.
