Carbon Regulatory Compliance

The Building Regulations and mandatory Carbon Trading Schemes will cause a step change in the way in which buildings are designed, managed and indeed how businesses operate up to 2020.

Building Regulations

The following changes are expected in UK Building Regulations over the next decade:-

  • 2010 25% reduction in carbon emissions.
  • 2013 44% reduction in carbon emissions.
  • 2019 Zero carbon buildings standard for all new non domestic buildings.

Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment – CRC) is the UK’s mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme that is due to be implemented in April 2010. It is central to the UK’s strategy for improving future energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions (as set out in the Climate Change Act 2008). It has been specifically designed to increase the energy efficiency of large commercial and public sector organisations including supermarkets, hotel chains, government departments and many local authorities.

Participating organisations will have to monitor their emissions and purchase allowances for each tonne of CO2 they emit. Allowances will be sold at a single sale at the beginning of each year (starting in April 2011), with a secondary market operating for the rest of the year.
