Strategic Design Advice - MOD

Objectives

Three main opportunities of wind power, biomass heating and energy from waste for renewable energy at Catterick Super Garrison were to be assessed to see how they could be employed to comply with Richmondshire planning requirements. The council stipulated that 20% of the energy demand of new developments should be met by renewable sources.

Delivery

b:ssec analysed and reviewed the 3 strategies and targets for renewable energy for Catterick Garrison in the light of emerging planning policy obligations. Capital and operating costs for the chosen technologies were established. A high-level business case for each chosen technology was produced to compare and contrast payback periods, potential for future expansion and offsetting potentials. As well as providing recommendations for the next steps and funding options.

Results

It was found that the 20% renewable planning requirement could be fulfilled through the use of either a single 2.5MW wind turbine or by the provision of 3 biomass boiler hubs. Possible low carbon credentials of the site were highlighted through extra expansion of onsite renewables.
