Strategic Design Advice - MARSTON'S
Objectives
Marston’s Inns and Taverns were in the fourth year of a challenging development programme with an energy and CO2 target emissions reduction of 15%. Marston’s were interested in becoming an environmental frontrunner within their sector and sought advice from b:ssec on how best to proceed with their environmental initiative.
Delivery
b:ssec (as part of The Carbon Trust Strategic Design Advice service) was commissioned to establish the business case for a new build, low energy and low/zero carbon eco pub. The service was delivered in 5 stages over a period of 6 months. The five project stages were as follows: A baseline review & opportunities assessment, development of business cases, specifying low carbon design advice performance, low carbon design, advice implementation and identifying next steps.
Results
Four energy strategies altering the standard Marston’s pub design were proposed for implementation achieving a range of carbon reduction results. Saving between £6.5k-17k per site in running costs and 45-100 tonnes of CO2 a year. Technical performance specifications for all technologies recommended during the analysis stage of the project were issued with a specification sheet. Once all technologies and recommendations had been discussed with Marston’s those identified as potentials were issued with supporting implementation documents.
