Green Store
Objectives
b:ssec was appointed by the Carbon Trust to help convert and extend the existing East Ham store to create a green, carbon neutral store. A totally carbon neutral store was seen to be too ambitious, however a significant carbon saving was expected through the use of a combined passive design, energy efficiency, sharing and recovering and renewable energy strategy.
Delivery
Design advice was provided to summarise the energy saving opportunities in conjunction with their associated business case. The majority of the opportunities were then implemented. This included a natural ventilation system using Windcatchers to cool the back of house areas and a natural daylight system using Sunpipes, in conjunction with low energy light fittings, to decrease the lighting energy demand. A draught lobby was included to reduce heat loss. Water saving technologies and alternative materials were also implemented.
Results
b:ssec conducted a post occupancy study to chart the effectiveness of the implemented technologies. Approximately a third was saved compared to the baseline store. Further energy saving feedback was presented to aid the design of future stores.
Key Points:
- Implemented Project.
- Achieved one third carbon saving.
